2015 Inductees

Bill Hately:

A member of the inaugural board, who moved the concept of the Pioneers in 1987. Bill was the catalyst and the original link between Scott Family and the Pioneers Basketball Club, approaching the late Allan Scott in the early days of its conception to assist with funding the Pioneers concept. Bill was an outstanding administrator, and was recognised by the league in both 1989 and 1990 as the Administrator of the year. Bill sadly passed away in late 2012, Bill’s wife Jan Hately accepted his induction into the Pioneers Basketball Club Hall of Fame.

Tony Cook: 

A member of the inaugural Scott Mobil Pioneers team from 1988. To this day Tony remains a much loved and recognized local member of the Pioneers Basketball Club community. 8 year captain of the Pioneers Basketball Club, playing a total of 199 games and assisting the club as a team manager in season 2009.

Jason Joynes: 

All-time leading games played for the Pioneers Basketball Club on 267 games. League All Star 5 in 1997 along with All League & South Conference leading Rebounder, 2003 Championship player. Jason was Inducted as one of the first Life Members of the Pioneers Basketball Club.

Sonya Knight: 

Assistant Coach of the Pioneers Basketball Club, took over head coaching position from John Burns part way through 2002. First ever club Championship Coach in 2003 claiming the South Conference & National Championships. Sonya, Head Coached until the end of 2005, from 2006 through to 2008 she assisted the Club on the management board.

Jason Sedlock:

Since arriving in Mount Gambier in 2000 Jason has filled the roll as player, head coach & life member of the Pioneers Basketball Club since. Averaging 14.5 points, 9.2 rebounds and 2.4 assists over his 247 game career. A 2003 Championship player, a local identity and to do this day a valued member of the Pioneers community – one of the very best to ever wear the Pioneers uniform.

Jaimie Holmes: 

Arriving in 2003 as the X-Factor, Jaimie made his mark on Mount Gambier and SEABL instantly. 2003 South Conference & National Championship player, ABA Final’s All Star 5, South Conference MVP, League All Star 5. Playing 107 Games for the Pioneers Basketball Club between 2003 & 2006, averaging 27.2 points, 12.6 rebounds, 1.9 assists and 1.8 blocks. Voted the Number 1 player, in 2013 at the Pioneers 25th Anniversary dinner.

The Pioneers Basketball Club “Hall of Fame” is divided into two categories; Player Members and General Members.

Athlete Members are those who have competed as a player for the Pioneers Basketball Club.
General Members are selected for excellence and outstanding achievements in roles supportive to sports participants, including but not limited to administration, coaching/training, sports media/history, sports science / technology and sports umpiring.

CRITERIA FOR NOMINATION OF ATHLETE MEMBERS

  1. Nominees must:
    • be superior achievers within the Pioneers Basketball Club; and
    • have the support of their peers.
  2. Nominees shall not be considered until after a two year waiting period following:
    • retirement from the highest level of competition;
  3. Team players will be considered on the same basis as individuals.
  4. The Selection Committee will consider the degree of difficulty for a Nominee to attain the highest level of achievement.
  5. The Selection Committee will consider in addition to a Nominee’s individual achievements, that person’s integrity, sportsmanship and character.
  6. Any person or organisation may make nominations for consideration by the Selection Committee.
  7. Nominations are to be bi-annually. Any nomination which has been previously submitted, but not selected may be reconsidered by the Selection Committee.
  8. The Selection Committee is the designation in respect to the selection or otherwise of any Nominee, subject always to the final approval by the Pioneers Basketball Club Board.

CRITERIA FOR NOMINATION OF GENERAL MEMBERS

  1. The primary requirement for selection as a General Member is high level achievement from personal effort or initiative, in a field of endeavour that contributes to the performances of athletes or to the development and status of the Pioneers Basketball Club.
  2. Nominees should have made a major contribution to the Pioneers Basketball Club.
  3. Nominees will generally be drawn from, but not limited to the following areas of involvement in sport:
    – Sports administration
    – Sports coaching
    – Sports media / history
    – Sport umpiring/ refereeing
  4. Nominees may be involved in other areas, but their achievements must satisfy the criterion detailed in point number 1.
  5. Whichever their area of involvement, Nominees will be;
    – Initiators
    – Sports developers
    – Achievers at the highest levels of office or appointment available
    – Contributors to their sport or to Australian sport generally at the highest level.
  6. Mere long term service or involvement with sport or sporting bodies by a Nominee without having satisfied the primary requirement in point 1 or demonstrated outstanding achievement arising from personal initiative or innovation is not sufficient justification for selection.
  7. Only in exceptional circumstances will there be more than two people annually inducted as General Members.
  8. Nominations are to be submitted bi-annually. Any nomination which has been previously submitted, but not selected may be reconsidered by the Selection Committee.
  9. Nominations for consideration by the Selection Committee may be made by any person or organisation.
  10. The Selection Committee reserves the right to seek endorsement of any nomination by the appropriate peak organisation(s) in Australia, responsible for the sport(s) or field(s) of endeavour in which achievements have been attributed to the Nominee.
  11. The endorsement of any nomination by the appropriate peak organisation is highly desirable, but its absence will not necessarily exclude the Nominee from selection.
  12. The Selection Committee is the designation in respect to the selection or otherwise of any Nominee, subject always to the final approval by the Pioneers Basketball Club Board.
